Fall 2014 YA Scavenger Hunt
Welcome to the fall 2014 YA Scavenger Hunt!
I'm Sarah Beth Durst, your host for this leg of the hunt. I'm the author of nine fantasy novels for children, teens, and adults, including CONJURED, VESSEL, and ICE. My next YA novel, CHASING POWER, is coming out in a week and a half (!!!) from Bloomsbury, and my next middle-grade novel, THE GIRL WHO COULD NOT DREAM, is coming out in fall 2015 from HMH/Clarion Books.
Other facts about me:
- I have ridiculously curly hair that once trapped a yellow-jacket and has been known to swallow bobby pins whole.
- I don't have a pet dragon but wish I did. Ditto magic wand, unicorn, or any superpower (other than hair that won't straighten even when completely soaked).
- If I could have any power (and assuming that I couldn't choose to cure diseases or feed everyone in the world), I'd want telekinesis.
- I'm afraid of skunks and Frisbees.
- My favorite number (which you need to know to win this scavenger hunt!) is the answer to life, the universe, and everything.
I'm thrilled to be participating in the hunt this year!
The YA Scavenger Hunt is a biannual event started by author Colleen Houck. This fall, 125 YA authors are participating (including yours truly). On this hunt, you will have access to exclusive bonus material from each of the participating authors, plus every author will also include their favorite number. (If you missed the hint above, mine is 42 and has been every since I read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy at a highly impressionable age.) Add up all the secret numbers, and you can enter for the grand prize: one signed book from each author in a team. But play fast: this contest will only be online for 72 hours!
You can start right here on this blog post, or you can go to the YA Scavenger Hunt page to find out all about the hunt, including links to all the authors participating. (There's also a handy "How to Hunt" page.) This year, there are six contests going on simultaneously, and you can enter one or all. I am a part of the Gold Team.
You can also win individual giveaways on some legs of the hunt, including this one! Scroll down to enter to win a signed copy of CHASING POWER.

SCAVENGER HUNT AUTHOR
Today I am hosting Susanne Winnacker for the YA Scavenger Hunt! Welcome, Susanne! Happy to have you here! *shares chocolate-covered raisins*
Susanne Winnacker studied law before she became a full-time writer. She lives with her husband, two dogs and two bunnies in Germany. She loves coffee (in every shape and form), traveling and animals. When she isn't writing, you can usually find her in the kitchen, experimenting with new vegan dishes.
ABOUT DEFECTOR (VARIANT SERIES) BY SUSANNE WINNACKER
But the air is tense at FEA headquarters. An agent has disappeared, and rogue variant organization Abel’s Army is likely the culprit.
When Tessa is summoned for her second mission, she is unexpectedly launched into a massive conspiracy. Her best friend Holly is kidnapped and Tessa knows it was meant to be her. But who is after her? And more importantly, why?
When the FEA's efforts to rescue Holly don’t yield any results, Tessa takes matters into her own hands. Desperate to save her friend and uncover the mystery behind Abel’s Army, Tessa launches her own investigation—but nothing could prepare her for what she finds. Everyone in her life is harboring secrets: Alec, her estranged mother, even the father she never knew.
The truth will take her out on the road and out of her comfort zone, with danger lurking everywhere. Summoning all of her courage and strength, Tessa must decide who can be trusted and what is worth fighting for -- even if it means going against the life she thought she wanted. Her final decision will leave readers breathless.
For more information, visit Susanne's website or blog. And you can learn more about DEFECTOR here.

I got the Hitchhiker's Guide reference, good one. Don't Panic! :) If I could have any super power I would choose freezing time (like Piper from "Charmed") I'm kind of a klutz and work where time is always in short supply.
Jess: Freezing time would be useful, especially for performing impressive ninja moves. Yay for Charmed!
Yay for 42 lovers!!! I'd love to be able to fly or have telekinesis or something like that.
Jenni: I'm reasonably certain that if I had the ability to fly, I'd crash into a tree.
I have my towel, do you?! ;-)
I think I would like to have telekinesis. Being able to move things with my mind would make life easier, I think. LOL
Michaela: Always have my towel! Telekinesis would just be so useful...
Invulnerability. I'm so sick of meat sack fragility!
The ability to make things grow. I have a garden and I'm very impatient (haha) so I would want to speed up the process.
Jennavier: Invulnerability would be nice. I'd settle for not constantly walking into the corner of the coffee table.
Erin: Ooh, that would be fun. For an extra bonus, perhaps it could come with automatic-weeding power.
I would love to have the power to be invisible.
I love your books! I would love the power of time-travel =)
Freezing Time for more entertainment time + the ability to sleep in. :D
And I guess maybe also using it to get an unofficial extension on a paper would be great, too...
Sana: I can see wanting that power. (Sorry, sorry, could not resist the pun.)
Sajda: Thanks!! Where would you go in time? Forward or back? Big leap or little?
Melissa: Freezing time to get extra sleep is brilliant. Want that power. Though I suppose I could wish for the power to not need sleep at all... except then I'd miss dreaming...
I would love the power to control the elements or move things with my mind!
I'd want to freeze time, just so I could get through my book pile. :)
I'm not sure if this counts as a super power, but I would love to have a photographic memory!
"The answer to life, the universe and everything..."
Melissa M.
(can't get it to stop posting as "anonymous"!)
I would love to become invisible.
FLYING!!!
I'm straightforward: flying. The kind of flying with super cool wings that probably get in the way any time they're not in use. Are they bird wings, bat wings, white, black, brown? I wouldn't be picky!
Read people's mind or go back in time
The ability to conjure up bacon and wine. I would be such a hit at breakfast parties.
I would teleport because I swear I waste half my time driving
I'd like the ability to stop time. Then I could observe people at my leisure.
If I could have any power, I'd want the ability to teleport. I love traveling but hate the actual travel between places - both transport wise and time wise. ;-)
elemental control
i would love to be able to communicate and heal ( plant and animals)
Invisibility
I want to be able to read minds so that I can know what I should say to people or not. Or maybe a power to make myself look differently.
I would really like to be able to read people's minds but only when needed.
I want to be able to stop time then maybe I could finish all the things on my to do list.
I'd like the ability to travel anywhere in the blink of an eye. :)
I would like the power to have time to read all the books. Because then I could read ALL THE BOOKS. Thanks for the giveaway!
I would love to be able to fly. I hate driving, haha. Thanks for the giveaway!
I'd love to fly and to be free to go where I want! ^-^
I would like to be able to use telekinetic power :) When I was younger I used to watch Charmed and while I know a lot of people didn't like her, Prue is still my favorite sister and it seems like such a useful power to have!
to teleport
That I could see the future :) Thank you for the giveaway!
Either Telekinesis (sometimes I'm downright lazy) or the ability to fly along with super strength so I could save money on gas and still carry all the groceries home.
I would like to have the ability to control the elements and telekinesis or being super smart with great problem solving skills and ninja reflexes.
I would like to have the ability to control the elements and telekinesis or being super smart with great problem solving skills and ninja reflexes.
I want to transport! That way I never have to drive in the snow and could go anywhere I wanted for free.
I would have the power to slow down time just so I could read all of these amazing books otherwise I won't get through them all!
I would probably choose flying. But not just floating in the air. Flying with actual wings, like a fairy. Now that would be cool :)
I'm torn between freezing time and teleporting...probably teleporting. . Would love to be able to travel all over the world without the actual...uh...travel
Teleportation!
Flight!
I can't wait to read one of you books! They sound so good!
I would choose a magical power because then you wouldn't be limited by one thing!
I am desperate for teleportation. So desperate.
Read minds!!
Flying!
I would want to be able to shape shift. I think that'd be pretty cool. It'd make for a great time when it came to pulling pranks lol
Teleportation!
I would love to be able to teleport!
Teleporting or freezing time would be AWESOME!!
I wouldn't mind having the ability of controlled time travel. Not like in Time Traveler's Wife where he has no control, randomly jumps in time with no clothes. OH NO! I want to be able to control my destiny and have my pants (and other article of clothing) on!! Though I would probably be busy correcting past mistakes and if that makes the continuum go haywire then re-correcting those corrections!! Or having the ability of jumping through space, like in the movie Jumper. Being able to see the sun rise in Asia and set in Hawaii on the same day would be nice, and having lunch in the Mediterranean wouldn't be too unpleasant! :)
#DOONLOVE
Just thought of another! Sorry. I know my first comment will only count. I wouldn't mind having the power not to freeze time (although that would be cool), but to freeze space. See, I work at a small retail store and it would be nice to freeze space, or the customers, in order for me to be able to truly straighten up the store; ESPECIALLY at closing time. But most importantly I'll still be 'on the clock' and be getting paid to clean and tidy up (hey this secret superpower isn't cheap, gotta buy my capes and masks just like any other person). Pretty sure if I had that secret ability my manager would LOVE me!!
Telekinesis! I've always wanted that power ever since I watched the tv show Heroes when I was younger. How amazing would it be to make objects move without touching it? Definitely makes life easier for sure! LOL :)
I would like to Fly, then i could go anywhere.
Hmmm. I'd probably choose teleportation or telekinesis. Both are seriously awesome (and definitely make me want to read CHASING POWER!). :)
Thanks for the bonus giveaway!
Telekinesis, telepathy & clairvoyance
I would have to say power to time travel: the opportunity to go to Regency London, study better for a test, and skip days that are just bad; that's too hard to say no to.
I would want to go back in time as my power
I'd like to control the weather because here in our country it's either too hot or too wet. I'd like to have a weather that is just right. And I'd also be able to stop weather phenomenons from ravaging a country.
It would have to be invisibility... Imagine: there's an extra donut on the counter, but you don't want the people standing in the kitchen to think you're a fatty.... And of course, the missing donut definitely wasn't you! I mean, did anyone see you? ;)
Superpower? To be able to absorb the superpower of anyone else!!
Aditi
There are so many choices for super powers! How can I chooose?! xD
I would say maybe flight because it would be awesome or even time-travel abilities (of course, with me being able to control it and it not randomly happening!)
Teleportation!
Thank you for the giveaway!!!
#doonlove
I'd want to have telekinesis too!
I would have telekinesis, so I could be like Matilda, and so I could pull good pranks on April Fool's day!
Fun hunt #DOONLOVE
I'd love to be able to become invisible!
I would like to have the ability to teleport, something to get from one place to another easily and fast!
Thanks for the giveaway!
The ability to alter odds.
healing, anyone of any affliction or injury including age - regnod(at)yahoo(d0t)com
Invisibility
SHAPESHIFTING!!
My superpower would definitely have to be telekinesis - would be fun to move things around with my mind.
I would love to be able to read people's minds, but be able to do it only when I chose to.
I would love to have telekinesis - it also might happen to be several powers in one since I'd be able to levitate myself and thus fly. ;)
I would choose the power to heal, without question!
I would want to be like the Flash. I always liked running fast when I was a kid.

Morgan ~ drewblythe2004@yahoo.com
I would choose the warp time, bend it, freeze it, something like that!!! I need more time to get everything done I need to and read the books I want! ;)
Transportation. No contest.
I love this event. Eeeep! So excited for the Chasing Power! <3
I would love to control the element's, I think that would be fun. :)

not to sound like a 9 year old but I would love to have powers like Elsa :)
Not to sound like a little kid but I would love to have powers like Elsa
I would have the power to deprive individuals of senses on occasion.
I'd love to teleport!
Telekinesis!
I would want to have witch powers I think that would be awesome, it's almost like having any power you want! :)
